How to Inflate an Exercise Ball Correctly (and Measure It Properly)
Most “my ball is the wrong size” complaints are actually inflation problems. PVC needs a stretch cycle before it will reach its printed diameter, and almost nobody measures the ball after pumping. Do these two things properly and your ball will hit its rated size, feel right, and last years longer.

The Six-Step Method
Step 1 — Warm and Unfold (2 hours )
Unroll the ball and leave it at room temperature, ideally 20–24 °C, for a couple of hours. Cold PVC is stiff and resists stretching; a warm ball inflates faster and more evenly. Never use a hair dryer or radiator to speed this up.
Step 2 — Mark Your Target Diameter
Before you pump, measure your target height on a wall and mark it with tape: 45, 55, 65, 75 or 85 cm from the floor. You will inflate to that mark, not by feel. If you are unsure which size you own or need, check the exercise ball size guide.
Step 3 — Inflate to About 80%
Remove the plug, seat the nozzle firmly and pump until the ball reaches roughly 80% of the wall mark. It will look soft and slightly oval — that is correct. Insert the plug.
Step 4 — The 24-Hour Stretch (Do Not Skip )
Leave it plugged for 24 hours. The PVC relaxes and expands, which is why the ball almost always looks bigger the next morning without you adding air. Skipping this step is the number one cause of stretched seams, premature leaks and balls that never reach full size.
Step 5 — Top Up to Full Size
Remove the plug and pump until the top of the ball touches your wall mark. Roll it a quarter turn and re-check — a ball can read 65 cm on one axis and 63 cm on another when it has not fully rounded out.
Step 6 — Seat the Plug and Verify Fit
Press the plug in flush so it sits below the surface; a proud plug will dig in when you sit. Then run the 90-90 check: sit on the ball with feet flat, and your knees and hips should form right angles with thighs parallel to the floor or angled slightly down. Knees too high means add air; hips too high means release some.

Circumference is the more accurate check if you have a soft tape measure: wrap it around the ball’s widest point and compare to the table.
How Firm Is Right?
Exercise balls are low-pressure vessels — typically well under 1 psi — so pressure gauges are useless. Use the thumb test: press firmly with your thumb into the top of the ball.

Troubleshooting

Deflating and Storing
Pull the plug and press the ball against your knee or the floor to push air out, or use a pump with a reverse setting. Store it inflated in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, radiators and pets, or fully deflated and loosely rolled — never folded tightly under weight, which creases the PVC permanently. For travel, deflate to about 30% rather than fully; it packs small and avoids sharp creases.
Safety and Replacement Rules
- Never exceed the printed diameter. Over-inflation thins the wall and is the leading cause of failure.
- Only use anti-burst (ABS) balls for loaded work — see exercise ball vs. weight bench.
- Replace a ball after 2–4 years of regular use, or immediately if you see bulges, deep scuffs, hairline cracks or a stretched valve area.
- Keep it off gritty floors and away from heat sources; both shorten its life dramatically.
